Conservation management and animal health monitoring of NATURA 2000 bird species (CONSN2KBIRDS)
Start date: Jun 30, 2010, End date: Sep 29, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

The current proposal’s long-term general aim is to reach and maintain favorable conservation status of two bird species (the Red-footed Falcon and the Roller) The sustainable conservation of both birds relies on cross-border cooperation of conservationists. The initial step in conservation is to assess exactly where and how many specimen are there and how do their numbers change. This can only be achieved with a well designed monitoring scheme. Thus, the primary objective of the applicants is to develop and employ standardized monitoring protocols for both species ensuring precise up-to-date patio-temporal information on the status of these birds .There are numerous general threats known to adversely affect these birds, amongst these one of the most severe is the lack of nesting sites in suitable habitats. This problem will be addressed by the applicants by installing artificial breeding platforms. As both species are exposed to various exotic diseases and parasites. Those poses potential threat on both human and bird populations. The current proposal aims to assess the prevalence of this. Achievements: An integrated population monitoring protocol of Rollers for both countries has been elaborated. In case of Red-footed Falcons an already existing protocol (developed within the project (LIFE05 NAT/H/000122) has been fine tuned and adapted to the local circumstances in SRB. Thecolour ringing schemes of both species and in both countries are managed in a standard database, together with the nest-boxes already in place. We implemented the population monitoring of both RFFs and Rollers, in the breeding season of2010 and 2011.Necessary equipment for partners have been purchased.Relevant professional meetings have been implemented.
