Conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in Lake Druksiai: transboundary wetland complex of international importance (Conservation, cooperation, biodiversity)

High biological diversity is characteristicof Lake Drūkšiai (shared by Lithuania andBelarus). It is the largest lake in Lithuaniaholding numerous rare and protectedspecies and habitats as well as more than30 protected bird species.The project safeguards and enhances the biodiversity of this territory throughconservation and sustainable managementof the critical species and their habitats,and improves public awareness. Especiallyimportant these issues will become afterthe closing of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plantsituated nearby the lake.Project results in detailed inventory andmapping of key habitats of Drūkšiai wetlandcomplex, supporting vulnerable species jointbiodiversity database, development of thejoint nature management plan of the wholecross-border site, reduced impacts of thefunctioning and termination of the nuclearpower station on biodiversity and enhancedcooperation among Lithuanian andBelarusian research organizations authoritiesand NGOs.
