Connecting PeopleTähtiniitty school is one school with many faces. In our school there are main stream classes from 1st to 6th grade where the language of instruction is Finnish. We also have main stream classes from 1st to 6th grade where the language of instruction is both Finnish and English. We have Special Needs classes for children with severe learning difficulties such as Down Syndrom etc. from 1st to 10th grade. In our school, there are 330 students aged between 6-18 -years. We emphasize in co-operation between different types of schools and in life skills needed in the modern world. The main goals of the project- Improving English skills and therefore further co-operation between school staff and parents. Considering that our school is multicultural, it is important to have staff with good English skills.- Mastering new teaching methods and materials can be achieved through networking, educating and improving language skills. We want to focus on high quality teaching and using modern teaching equipment and materials. We also want to involve students as well as ICT and media skills in our teaching.- Improving the quality of English language teaching. It is especially important to teach English to the children with special needs to avoid being marginalized from the society. Good English skills also help to use ICT wider in everyday life.- Networking and using e-Twinning net sites with other European colleagues and students create new possibilities and bring new partners and international projects in our school.Participants of the projectWe have 10 teachers participating in this project; 2 Special Need Class teachers, 4 Teachers, 2 Special Education Teachers, Principal, an Art teacher and a School Assistant. The Art Teacher will be applying to the EcArt art therapy conferences in Poland. The other teachers are applying English language courses ,that support the goals of our school. The School Assistant is applying conflict management course.Organisation of the projectThe participants talked first about the needs of our school in relation to the projects available. We did the application together and meet regularly to evaluate the progress of the project. We inform the School Board and other staff about the progress. We discuss and decide which courses would be most useful to the participants. We also choose appropriate in-service training courses and make independent arrangements accordingly. All the participants are prepared to introduce and present the outcome of the training in the school or in other appropriate situations. We are going to set up our own specific file in Google Drive for this project. There everyone can update information and share ideas form the course. The benefits and outcomes of each course will be evaluated together. The aims and objectives of the projectOur teachers will gain deeper understanding on how to enable different kinds of learners to join in on common activities. The teaching in our school will become more inclusive and cooperation between pupils from diverse backgrounds will increase as well as teachers gain tools for their lesson planning. One of the goals in our school is to increase inclusivity and cooperation between different kinds of learners. We will learn new ways of taking full advantage of the possibilities of information and communications technology and e-learning environments in our teaching. This will also offer new perspectives on how modern technology can be used to further diversify our teaching methods, as well as encourage the students to be active and independent learners. The improvement of the teachers English language skills will make cooperation both within the school and between the school, parents and other partners easier. The experience of communicating in English in a professional context will also encourage everyone involved in the project to take part in other international projects in the future. Focusing on the professional development of our teachers will have a visible, positive impact on the quality of teaching and learning. After the project we evaluate its effects to our school, students and staff. We consider together how to use the information and skills we got from the project to develop our school organization and curriculum. We hope that the project increases the enthusiasm of our staff to apply for similar projects in the future.
