CommEUnicate! - Connecting Young People Through Communication
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Rural areas in Austria are often lacking a European or transcultural perspective: although migration is a relevant topic, migrants are mostly invisible and excluded from public discourse, and the many advantages of a Europe without borders are not as perceptible in everyday life as in urban areas. This is why the EVS-Project "CommEUnicate! Connecting Young People Through Communication" aims at creating a European discourse among young people in the Salzkammergut region. The youth organisation “Jugendzentrum YOUZ” invites one young volunteer from Spain to become an active part at the youth center, work with young people from the area and accompany them in their everyday life for 10 months. This volunteer, Jenni Fernández Fernández (age 23, living in Barcelona) will become an “ambassador” for her culture and impart cultural knowledge to local young people. She will become part of the team at the youth center YOUZ, which entails a broad range of activities such as organizing smaller events and projects, motivating young people to take part in them, talk to them regularly about their life and give counsel if needed, etc. In order to have a broader platform, the project will cooperate with a local community radio “Freies Radio Salzkammergut”: the volunteer will acquire basic skills to produce radio content and broadcast a number of radio shows about her cultural perspective, European experience and other youth-related topics. The language of this content is up to the volunteer. She will also include young people from the local community in her media work to impart media literacy to them. Apart from many work-related skills, she will acquire a number of key competences (such as language learning) by using the potentials of informal learning in both of these organizations according to her individual needs. Through these acts of communication, a new, Europe-centered discourse can emerge in the Salzkammergut area and the importance of mobility, communication, tolerance and cultural diversity as a resource in a united Europe will be highlighted and made visible. Therefore, the project aims at:- creating a European awareness among young people by making transcultural communication a part of everyday life- imparting new language and communication skills and other key competences to a volunteer, while simultaneously providing a platform to apply these skills on a daily basis- exchanging communicative, cultural and social competences between the local community and the volunteer- making the cross-cultural experience of a young person accessible to a broader public- decrease stereotypes, prejudice and racism through creating a cultural discourse in the rural area of the Salzkammergut- raising awarness among young people of the many possibilites offered by the youth mobility programmes in Erasmus+ - creating a sustainable shift in discourse among young people, showing them new values and points of view and empowering them to become active citizens in their community.
