Comenius in Business, Science and Arts
Start date: Dec 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The aim of the Project Comenius in Business, Science and Arts is to develop courses for research programmes in all three fields of study. These courses consist of special modules that are part of the general curriculum for all students from 12-18 years. The idea behind this project is that teachers offer CLIL-based modules in the three mentioned fields in English, which enforces the competencies of students and teachers both in English and in the course-related subjects. In Cumbria the teachers were provided with a tailor-made course: CLIL in Cumbria 1 / Activating Teaching & Learning in the English CLIL classroom. During this course participants have: • Explored the basic principles behind teaching subjects in English (CLIL); • Had the opportunity to improve their fluency in English and increase their confidence in using English in the classroom; • Experienced at first hand many active learning strategies and techniques and considered how these might be adapted their own subjects and contexts; • Acquired ways of encouraging students to use English in the classroom; • worked on the project Comenius in Business, Science and Arts (planning, development of materials, etc) • had a truly “British” experience with emphasis on enhancing their own intercultural awareness. • spent a day in a local school and observed lessons in their subject area. • performed linguistic and cultural tasks throughout this day at the local school. • had the opportunity to ask subject-related questions • explored their subject terminology. • had the opportunity for school links and future exchanges and partnerships. The above-mentioned course has proved to be highly effective. The participants were fully immersed in the English language regarding classroom language and subject-related terminology. Teachers that participate in this project have started to develop modules and course materials. Eventually all course materials will be in English and therefore the participants need to be trained in CLIL skills in order to be able to develop and teach the modules in English. After thorough research we choose Janet Streeter’s ClIL in Cumbria as our partner for the teacher training. Guided by their teachers our students have done research in cooperation with other international institutions like public organs, NGO's, universities and companies. They have discovered the coherence within a society and the world around them. They furthermore have benefited from the learning experience outside the classroom. This approach prepares them in a real-life setting and environment for their future careers. Their research was assessed by means of a portfolio and a profile project research paper according to the requirements of the WON-platform (Wetenschapsoriëntatie Nederland). The first phase of the project involving students started in October 2015 and lasted until June 2016. Groups of 4VWO students did various research projects in areas related to their profile subjects. The second group of students started in March 2016 and will finish their research by the end of November 2016. They have written reports and given oral presentations. Please find an attached document “Some online examples of the Comenius in Business, Science and Arts Research projects” with a few examples of online summaries of some of the students’ research. The teachers that participate in this project and followed the CLIL in Cumbria course will have to continue to further develop skills in key areas including CLIL, language and methodology at all levels, literature and culture, materials development, testing, evaluation, assessment and technology-assisted language learning. All these learning activities and their outcome will be kept account of in the participant's portfolio. The entire project is intended to last for the coming 5 years and will eventually be expanded to a larger part of the general curriculum, hence further enforcing the 21st Century skills of our students and the CLIL skills of an expanding number of our subject teachers.
