Background Pite-Sami language, or Arjeplog-Sami language as it often is named in Sweden, belong to the central Sami language. It is totally obsolete in Norway while there are as few as 20 people that can the language in Sweden. Pite-Sami is on the list of language under threat of extermination and is serious threaded. It is enormously important to take care of Pite-Sami language when it consists of way of thinking and therefore is carrier of culture historical knowledge. In Pite-Sami there are few written sources and there is no vocabulary. Sami Association of Arjeplog has since autumn 2006 take part in a project with purpose to document Pite-Sami language. The project has been carried out in cooperation with Norway when this language is spoken in a zone from Piteå at the coast to Bodö in Norway. In Norwegian side the words are translated to Norwegian. During the first phase of the project we where able to collect about 2 500 words. Objective and aim Pite-Sami is a language that keeps alive in spoken language by less than 20 people. Pite-Sami is very little documented. The knowledge is mainly among the older generation and therefore it is important to collect information before it disappears from spoken language. The aim is to document between 8 000 to 10 000 words after that record right pronunciation. After that the meaning is to produce a school book for beginners in Pite-Sami language.
