Colindres, Youth Way
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This group project consisted of the reception of 3 volunteers from Germany, Hungary and Spain, who carried out activities with SERJUCO (Youth Service of the Municipality of Colindres in Cantabria, Spain). Volunteers collaborated to carry out activities and planned actions run by the Department of Youth council of Colindres, which has a team of professionals with significant experience related to the field of non formal education and socio-cultural activities with children and youth, of which volunteers were part. It was the result of collaboration between Asociación Ser Joven, its international partners and the Youth Service of the Municipality of Colindres (SERJUCO) and in addition to the objectives of SERJUCO, sought to enrich young people, volunteers and professionals bringing them different perspectives, techniques, ideas of foreign volunteers, bringing closer other European cultures (languages, folklore, gastronomy) to youth and children at the center which would be impossible without direct contact with the foreigners; to give young volunteers the opportunity to get to know Spain, Cantabria and especially the people of Colindres, the structure of SERJUCO and its facilities, tools and activities, allowing these young people to discover the world of non formal education. The project also aimed to refresh the working methods of the professionals and establish a network of collaboration between professionals in Europe; encourage youth participation in European programs involving mobility and learning. Moreover we wanted to help young people from Colindres to lose their fear of speaking foreign languages, traveling and learn to respect what is unknown and different. Volunteers helped with the development of the activities in the Youth House (cooking workshops, competitions, demonstrations), training in the field of non-formal education (Podcast, Radio Online, Prezzi presentations, video editing) and talks and activities to encourage active participation in the programs of the European Union, a project encouraging reading, workshops for parents with the aim of prevention in different fields and also collaborated in the Children play center, developing workshops, games and activities included in the annual program. Apart from all programmed activities, the 3 volunteers proposed and carried out their own initiatives, such as conversation groups in English, German and a project to encourage reading in English with children from 3-8 years in collaboration with the local primary school. Moreover the volunteers participated in activities carried out by Asociación Ser Joven with its partners in Cantabria. The objective of these activities is basically educating youth through different free time activities (volunteers participated in the development of the unit on intercultural learning at the Training Course for Youth Group Leaders at the University of Cantabria). Among the direct results of the project we can highlight the development of the next EVS hosting project and two EVS sending projects with SERJUCO users and volunteers as participants. Participants and professionals have been able to improve their communication in English and German and learnt about different aspects of the cultures of the countries of origin of the volunteers. They have launched new initiatives (conversation workshops, workshops to encourage reading in English) and youth and professionals got to know several mobility opportunities in Europe. Thanks to this EVS project, local volunteers engaged have participated in training activities in Europe developing their coaching skills and were involved in initiatives to promote the Erasmus + Program. The professionals have discovered and improved forms of dialogue respecting different ways and opinions of volunteers. Project results are shared through a BLOG created by the EVS volunteers https://colindresyouthway.wordpress.com/author/colindresyouthway/ as well as SERJUCO Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Serjuco-Juventud-Colindres/886015228126807 and the Anual Report of Asociación Ser Joven: http://issuu.com/asociacionserjoven/docs/memoria_2014 Asociación Ser Joven's website here: http://goo.gl/U0oOz1
