CLIL - Bilingual teaching methods at Drammen Upper Secondary School
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

In the school year 2013-2014 Drammen Upper Secondary School started Drammen International Programme, which is a programme in which 30-35% of the subjects are taught in English. For the first -year students, the following subjects, in addition to English itself, are taught in English: geography, social studies and an international lesson a week that enables us to work with interdisciplinary projects using alternative learning arenas, like visits, seminars, lectures, role plays etc. The second and third -year students are taught international English and English for social studies, history and religion in English. Drammen International Programme is based on three principles: bilingual teaching, an interdisciplinary approach and alternative learning arenas and an international focus, including a European dimension. The objective of our project is to establish a CLIL- environment among teachers of Drammen International. Over the two-year project period 8 teachers who teach at Drammen International are going to participate in CLIL-courses in the UK. To facilitate dissemination after the courses 2 teachers attend the same course. This means that four times during the project period there will be teachers bringing new input to the development of our programme. In other words, the teachers who have recently attended a course will work with those who have already attended a course and those who are going to attend later on - on a regular basis. One of the factors that will help us create a CLIL- environment will be this frequent preparation to, participation in and feedback from the different courses. Our aim is to become a CLIL-resource centre in our region, and we plan to disseminate our new practice to colleagues at Drammen Upper Secondary School, other colleagues in the county , Buskerud country's network of English teachers, to pupils and parents, as well as to the national Elos-network and the general public. To make sure we accomplish what we want to achieve, we are going to assess our work through questionnaires before, during and after the project period. The number of students applying for admittance to Drammen International will also be used as and indication of how successful our project has been. We are conviced that Drammen International as a programme is going to benefit greatly from the development of a CLIL environment of integrated teaching and cooperation that we envisage. .
