Cleaning of villages and tributaries of the Danube from waste

The overall objective of the project was sustainable protection of the river Danube in the areas of municipalities Majdanpek and Dimovo. One of the specific objectives was to keep the villages and towns which are placed on the river Danube and its tributaries banks without waste. Another very important specific objective was to raise awareness on environmental issues through education in elementary schools and involving the local media Achievements: The project objectives were achieved through the following specific activities:• Elaboration of data base of illegal dump sites of house hold and other solid waste. According to data base of illegal wild dumps partners have removed all the waste with backhoe loader and took it away with tipper truck;• Purchasing of investment equipment – tipper truck and backhoe loader for both partners, Municipality of Majdanpek and Dimovo;• Cleaning, rehabilitation and re-cultivation of illegal dump sites;• Supply of the soil (humus) for re-cultivation and rehabilitation of the terrain. Approximately 30cm thick layer of humus was spread on the previously cleaned dumps;• Supply of 200 containers for house hold waste of which 50 for glass, 50 for plastic and 100 for other house hold waste. All of the containers have been placed in the villages within the both municipalities;• Rising awareness among school children among 7-14 years old about importance of environmental issues, hiring a lecturer and printing of t-shirts, caps, brochures and posters.
