City Guides – Development of a European standard for city guides (basic training, European validation and recognition and stimulation of local cooperation on the tourist labour market

The needs analysis confirms that there is little professional training for the city guides and that the situations at the national levels differ very much. The project therefore aims at 1) developing an educational program for specific, practice oriented and with a theoretical section; 2) adapting the training course toward a web based package because of the low numbers of participants per educational region; 3) defining and standardising a common basic level for city guides; 4) designing a practical training and examination of the quality (attitude, knowledge, experience, skill, etc.); establishing cooperative forms among interested groups (city councils, tourist information centres, vocational education and training colleges, organisations for cultural heritage); 5) exchange information, experience and knowledge on a national base and on the European level as well; 6) standardising a European certification for city guides, supported by the professional organisations; 7) testing, evaluating and improving the developed products; 8) improving skills and competences of people while introducing changes into national vocational training systems and practices; 9) introducing new approaches to the use of existing methods, instruments, products, and applying them to new themes; 10) fostering innovation also by new forms of cooperation among at the highest levels of decision makers and concerned policies; 11) disseminating a strategy which also focuses on the European recognition and on a common certification, on the definition of standardised procedures to guarantee qualifications.
