CENTER FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY AND EDUCATION
Start date: Oct 1, 2014, End date: Dec 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project is aiming to help the volunteer to gain experience in teaching, practice and to gain different skills and abilities, by working with minorities, women, youth and the LGBT community in B&H. He will be working with young people who had lack of adequate support and guidance in learning valuable social skills necessary for coping with different situations, so they often struggle to integrate into society. Also the major problems facing Bosnian youth include: hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, emotional deregulation, substance abuse, and hyper vigilance. So working on these projects he would gain many different skills, and for the first time he would come in contact with people who are suffering from war trauma and people who live in poverty. In this way he would learn what the right way to approach them is. The objectives of this project are for the volunteer: to gain practical skills and needed abilities in teaching; to understand the needs of minorities, women, youth and the LGBT community as they are the target groups of the receiving organization; and to learn how to deal with this target group and which methods of teaching to use. This project will address different topics like: 1. Teaching and learning of foreign languages, 2. Romas and/or other minorities and 3. Labour market issues incl. career guidance/youth unemployment. Planned activities for this project are: 1. Initial orientation and information session; 2. Supporting the running of various workshop to improve learning skills. He will be helping in providing English lessons for children who are attending primary and secondary school; working with children with emotional and behavior problems; helping to improve spoken English of young people; helping young people to start a job search; 3. Supporting the running of various workshops for Roma children - Taking part in workshops were he can learn about group interaction, creative work, active learning and development of social skills; and taking part in a workshop which is delivered by a psychologist he will learn about initial assessment/interview with children, assessment of intellectual functioning, and personality assessment/ behavioral assessment; 4. Project development - He will learn how to conduct research and preparation of project proposals, how to write a project proposal, how to plan a budget and how to put the project in action; 5. Taking classes of learning Bosnian language - Because he has already learned some Bosnian, the teacher will determine his level of knowledge and start with perfecting his knowledge; 6. Mentor meeting - He will meet his mentor three times a week in order to assess his progress and address any issues which may arise. This project will impact the participant in many ways. First the volunteer will gain an insight on working with different groups of people, like socially excluded children, minorities and the LGBT community in B&H. He will adapt different ways how to approach them and methods how to teach them. He will also learn how to work with children who have learning difficulties and behavioral disorders. Also this will be an opportunity to put his academic knowledge into practice. Secondly the team of the host organization will get an motivated young volunteer and will get an opportunity to learn about different methods of teaching which are popular in Italy and Malta. Working with this volunteer will bring to the organization new insights and ideas which could help make them aware of different, innovative methods through which they can provide their service to the community. Finally, as this is Wings of Hope's first time receiving an EVS volunteer, the project will impact the organization by building their organizational capacity and experience of working with European projects. In relation to the participating organizations, their work with the participant and his innovative methods and their close working relationship with each other, will expand their resources in relation to ideas and methodologies. This will impact their local communities in any future endeavors they partake in. But also the fact that the volunteer comes from Italy and has lived some time in Malta could enable some sort of cooperation with these different cultures.
