Context/Background
-Until this academic year language learning at Canonbury was taught inconsistently by non-specialist class teachers who lacked confidence and motivation to teach MFL effectively. Focus was spread between French and Spanish, diluting the impact of a single language
- This year the school has committed itself to allocating a specialist Spanish teacher to teach weekly lessons to all pupils from Year1-6.
Objectives:
-Pupils to make signifcant progress in the Target language
-Teaching of MFL becomes an established part of the curriculum with a high profile throughout the school
-To support class teachers and support staff in acquisition of the language
-To increase teachers' confidence in teaching the language, building on the core lesson taught by specialist teacher
-To develop an understanding of the culture of the country of origin of the language

Description of activities:
Visiting target country for CPD in language and culture
Establish language ambassadors in school
Monitor progression of language acquisition of participants
INSET in school to share best practice
Team teaching to ensure involvement of class teacher in modelling language and assessment of pupils
Methodology:
Provide intensive language experience of a significant number of staff that can then be applied in the classroom and beyond
Impact:
Increased subject knowledge for participants and confidence to apply in class
Raised attainment of pupils in target language
Longer Term Benefits
Increased engagement and interest in other languages and cultures estabvlished in the school
A greater number of teachers and support staff teach MFL capably in the Primary phase
An increase of the number of teachers specialising in teaching languages to younger children
Partnership established with Spanish school that facilitates communication and enriches the educational experience of all
