Colégio Vizela is a school for pupils aged 3 to 14 and it was opened in 1999. The educational project of Colégio Vizela is based on the idea that the school of the twenty-first century shouldn´t only prepare students accordingly to the traditional academic version. The guidelines of our educational project are based on the effective development of key skills in this new century society: Citizenship, Critical Spirit, Autonomy, Creativity, Entrepreneurship, Initiative, Learning to Learn. We believe, we defend and we apply methodologies that develop these attitudes in our students, because like this we know that we are effectively preparing them to a continuous changing society, to a society that urgently needs active citizens, entrepreneurs who have the will and the responsibility to risk in this new world. Therefore, practices, processes and school organizations have been changed, rethought. However, in this kind of school, the training of its professionals is obviously crucial and decisive. Some of our teachers have already attended training in Europe. And we have had, over the past few years, a real and consistent development of a European dimension of our school. The goals of our school are: 1. modernize and internationalize the school, developing its European dimension (European citizenship) . 2 . prepare young people for a future in a society where European integration and globalization are a reality . 3. promote exchanges of experiences with other European professionals in order to discuss / share our practices and having the opportunity to know new practices that enhance the quality of our school . 4 . reduce the academic failure rate in our school (and, consequently, reduce early school living) . 5. give the school the ability of building its own cross-border European network so that the individual initiatives of the teachers can be expanded and integrated in a bigger context which encourages the exchange, the reuse and the monitoring in a continuous, natural and necessary existence of European flows. 6. develop changes in educational practices and processes, enhancing the quality and efficiency of the school management and educational organization. Our European strategic plan lies in the attendance of teachers (of different subjects), as well as members of the school board, in training across Europe. The participation in these courses is deeply connected to our needs. The courses are related to themes, such as: individual learning , outdoor education, national and European democratic citizenship , technologies related to Digital Earth and geo-media , innovation methods in teaching / learning , leadership and communication in education . The project participants are eleven teachers and elements of the school board (19 professionals), with experience in education and with a remarkable motivation and professional awareness. Each teacher will participate in a course individually, in order to be able to train colleagues in his school and in other schools. We believe that we always learn a lot by knowing the cultural, social and political differences / similarities that are reflected by the educational choices of each European country. It is essential to understand our role in Europe and provide our students with the most innovative / creative / efficient tools that are being developed in the rest of Europe. We believe, in a sustainable way, that contacting with other experiences, skills and knowledge, our educational territory will increase significantly its quality. We will change our educational territory. With the implementation of this European development plan, our school will increase the quality and efficiency of our students learning experiences; it will broaden the cultural horizons of students and entire staff ; it will significantly promote the European dimension of the school and, therefore, it will contribute for the construction of a more democratic, active, innovative , creative and entrepreneurial Europe. This project will profoundly help our school embracing paths of a 21st century school, in a local, regional, national, European and international dimension. We know and we believe that nowadays young people need a new, different and efficient school. A country, a continent evolves through education and training of their young people. Europe's future depends on what we do in the present with our youth. Schools in Europe have a mission to accomplish. Our school has a mission to accomplish!
