Building a bridge to unity
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Oct 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Building a bridge to unity" is a long term (12 months) EVS for one volunteer, which will take place in behalf of TEJO (World Esperanto Youth Organisation) at our headquarters in the city centre of Rotterdam. Volunteering is an essential part of TEJO’s work, as almost all our activities are done on a voluntary basis. TEJO provides to its volunteers a really international and intercultural experience. The EVS volunteer will be involved in this environment, supporting the organisation’s staff in the implementation of different activities, and eventually in developing new projects. To our volunteers at the headquarters we offer a truly international and intercultural experience every year. The EVS volunteer will be playing a supportive role to the TEJO's staff and board. He will be able to design brochures and leaflets, edit website articles, assist in organisation of conferences (i.e. prepare invitations, organise conference rooms and catering, register participants, prepare photo/video documentation of events), update databases, prepare the background material for TEJO publications, draft the articles for its newsletter, support communication activities, along with other volunteers making it possible for him to build his teamwork skills. In fact, overcoming communication obstacles which separate the young people all over the world has been one of our main priorities, through the organisation of educational programs, weeklong conferences and trainings. The pursue of our fundamental aim, to promote understanding among young people, is possible thanks to the voluntary engagement of youngsters across all over the world, who establish a positive collaboration through the use of the neutral language Esperanto. The volunteer will support the staff in different activities in the fields of education, public relations and event management at a European scale. He will receive an insight in the management of the everyday office and field work of an international NGO, and empowered to develop and promote his own ideas and pursue his alternative solutions. The project will largely focus on youth work and participation, public relations, culture, the promotion of events and the transmission to the local and international public the organisation’s values. The volunteer will therefore be encouraged to broaden his knowledge about the Esperanto language, its culture and the concepts of language rights, diversity and protection of lesser used languages, and to advocate for them in different manners, e.g. during our residential events or through the media and social networks.A special attention will be given to the volunteer to develop his personal project along with the project set up by the organisation. At the end of the volunteering year in Rotterdam, the volunteer will have experienced communicating and cooperating with young people from all over the world and will have had a taste of working in a multinational office and environment thanks to TEJO.
