Bruxelles, melting brol de cultures
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

In order to fully enjoy and understand the cultural melting pot of our city, our school plans to offer 12 teachers the opportunity to participate in the courses provided by CHAIN (Cultural Heritage Activities and Institutes Network). The main topic of those courses is the interaction between Europe and other parts of the world, with a specific focus on the influences that the rest of the world has had on European culture. We have selected the following courses from the program proposed by CHAIN: - Las Otras Orillas, on the mutual influences North and South of Gibraltar, - Tracing back Europe: from Thessaloniki to Istanbul, on the intercultural dialogue between the Christian and Islamic worlds, - Cyprus, the Forty Dragons, on the artistic heritage and its various origins (Greek, Jewish, Venetian, Ottoman, British, from the Crusades), - Sicily, a chain of civilizations, on the interaction between cultures, and on the topic"Civilizations: chains or clash?" The participants will be teachers, educators or members of the school management. They will be selected according to their motivation to participate and to move the school forward, according to their personal involvement and their willingness to communicate in English. Most of the courses we have chosen will be organized during school holidays, so as not to disturb the running of the school. The participants will attend the courses in pairs, in order to compare their experiences. They will take an active part in the work proposed by the course provider (e.g. the Chain book), and after they come back, they will form a team which will contribute to the integration of the new skills into the lessons and cultural activities of the school. Our long-term goal is to improve our knowledge of the cultural components of the European borders, and to perceive their symbiosis. Thanks to those courses, we will get models that will help us experience the cultural diversity of our school and its neighborhood in a more harmonious way, thus enabling us to help our students live their citizenship as inhabitants of Brussels and as Europeans with more open-mindedness, tolerance and diversity.
