PROJECT
FINISHED
The Upper Secondary school “Istituto di Istruzione Lorenzo Guetti” is a strategic formative reference point for the local territory of the Giudicarie Valleys, which are peripheral to the major cultural centres of the Autonomous Province of Trento. Due to its decentralized location, the school needs, now more than ever before, to look towards Europe, to actively participate in the exchange of know- how and methodology , and has given its teachers the possibility of frequenting training courses, offering them the chance not only of improving their skills but also to meet and exchange ideas with other teachers in Europe.
Teachers, as expected, have been involved in three main types of activities:
- A methodological – didactic teacher training course for teaching foreign languages (and a refresher course for foreign language teachers);
- A CLIL methodological – didactic teacher training course, for teachers of other subjects to help prepare them to teach their subjects in a foreign language as the new national and European decrees require;
- Courses to strengthen language knowledge for teachers of other subjects so as to eventually reach a B2 level of the Common European Framework in at least one European language.
Thanks to the great interest gained within our teaching community, the project which was originally thought for 24 teachers, actually involved 25 teachers, divided into foreign language teachers (English, German and French) and teachers of other subjects. We have therefore been able to face the new directive for Upper Secondary Schools which orders to incorporate more and more subjects taught in a foreign language in all final courses, through the so-called CLIL methodology, and also to enhance and strengthen team work. This spirit of collaboration and its benefits are being extended to all members of the teaching staff, and consequently to the pupils, who have always been and still remain the ultimate protagonists of the didactic play.
In order to best take advantage of each single action the school has offered, in the preparatory phase, a course in CLIL methodology, in the methodology of teaching European languages and three refresher language courses (English for Beginners, English Intermediate and Deutsch Konversation). A refresher course has been activated for the use of the learning platform and eTwinning, to involve all the teaching staff in the project, turning our school into one of the most active in eTwinning in our entire province.
In order to be consistent and truthful in the delicate process of evaluating the project results obtained, other actions have been set in motion to supervise and monitor the whole project, from the preparatory stage to the global follow-up stage.
These have been carried out:
- ongoing and at the end, by the Headmistress and the Evaluation Committee and the designated representative of the administrative office;
- at the end of the entire project, by the Project Quality Committee of the school (step which is still being performed as Broadening Horizons is part of a list of other projects belonging to this school year’s offer and therefore still under evaluation as it will be compared to the rest of them).
The results of the project have been valued taking into account the outcome and impact on the students, and the added value of organizing teaching and learning in the school. The evaluation criteria have been activated via :
- self-observation forms for the teachers involved;
- appreciation questionnaires for teachers and students;
- teacher’s logs;
- pre and post course language competence tests.
The aim of this project has been (and still is) to significantly transform:
- teachers into didactic researchers;
- classes, turned into environments of research and exchange;
- the use of new information technology to realize collaborative relations and exchange experiences at a European level, via a network of schools and peers.
Long term benefits, which will interest teachers and above all students, include:
- motivation for constant refresher courses and confrontation to improve daily didactic activity, aimed at constantly offering students the best methodological and didactic innovations;
- putting CLIL activities into practice in a more efficient and effective manner (as a matter of fact CLIL activities have been greatly increased since the beginning of the project, going from 10 classes to 20 after the mobility);
- promoting interdisciplinary and transnational teacher collaboration, in order to give them an active role, and not an isolated one, in the innovative process of education at a provincial, national, European and Worldwide level;
- increasing motivation in the learning of a European language as an instrument of communication and self expression, with respect to the cultural and social linguistic diversity that Europe expresses;
- enhancing the sense of belonging to Europe and the awareness of its values.
