Broaden the borders of disability - deaf people conducting recreation activities in special school and giving lectures in schools in Shianda, Kenya.
Start date: Mar 1, 2014,

"Broaden the borders of disability - deaf people conducting recreation activities in special school and giving lectures in schools in Shianda, Kenya" is a 6-month long European Volunteer Service that takes place from May 2014 to November 2014. Two deaf Estonian volunteers are accompanied by one Estonian sign-language interpreter. The service takes place in Shianda village in Western Kenya and the main themes of the project are youth leisure/recreational activities, anti-discrimination and disability. Two Estonian volunteers will conduct recreational activities at Rise and Shine special school - a school where disabled students study together with regular students. Volunteers also visit other schools in the Shianda village area twice a week to lecture about disabled people's life in Estonia/Europe. One of the main aim of the project is to tackle the problem and to reduce discrimination of disabled people in Kenya - it is a huge problem in that area due to the false beliefs, traditions and lack of education and proper information. Another aim is to give the opportunity to deaf people to have a volunteer experience that would be comfortable and fully satisfying due to all the special attention and preparation made available for the volunteer to enable deaf people to gain the positive intercultural experience and to provide a solid ground for intercultural dialogue. The main objectives are to foster mutual understanding between the people from different countries, to increase social inclusion and active participation of disabled people by offering them volunteering opportunity with special support by the sign-language interpreter and by offering recreational activities to young disabled and regular Kenyan children.
