Bring the Youth to the Top
Start date: Aug 15, 2016, End date: May 14, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Stakeholders and youth working on mountain issues, since few years acknowledge that the future of mountain territories, and in a certain way the one of youth are intertwined as well as the challenges faced by them.In order to maintain its social and economic activity and its strong local cultures, mountain territories need to sustain the youth living there. Mountain activities have here a fundamental role to play in shaping the identity and the attractiveness of the territories in the interest of the populations leaving therein or for new populations settling there, but as well to develop a sustainable.Meanwhile, education experts agree on the pedagogical interest that mountains represent. In a society ruled by consumption and immediate satisfaction, mountain is a fundamental tool for education. Having the chance to experience of natural mountain environments means going out of urban ones, discovering untamed and fragile nature, build different relations where you reinvent solidarity, experience a true team spirit and long time discussions. On the basis of these observations and identified needs, the 20 most important French uncontaminated mountain institutions gave the Coordination Montagne the chance to organise a European seminar on these questions in order to share good practices and improve the skills of stakeholders working these issues. The seminar’s goal is to make different youth stakeholders meet, including youth, sport and tourism ones as well as training organisations, associations for the protection of nature, unions, university and experts on the governance of mountain territories. In addition to this, these actors would work on how to favour the access and participation of young people in mountain territories and especially of those who are at risk of social exclusion, early school leavers and those who participate less in local activities for whom the lack of inclusion often leads to inactivity and violence in urban areas. The conclusion of the seminar will have a practical impact on the group “Jeunes et Montagne” (Youth and Mountain) of the Coordination Montagne, since this group has as goal to follow up on the seminar by structuring the 2017/2020 strategy on the access of young people in mountain activities. Thanks to this seminar, the Europeanization of the activities will be integrated in the strategy. Working on a network will furthermore mean an important communication on the results of the seminar and a work on local and European advocacy for facilitating the access of young people in mountain activities with the goal of having a European network of mountain practitioners in charge of professional and local development.
