Bridging Cultural Boundaries
Start date: May 30, 2016, End date: Nov 29, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Scout Association of Malta and FEDERACIÓN DE SCOUTS CATÓLICOS DE CASTILLA-LA MANCHA are applying for a youth exchange project, that seeks to give its youths, all of whom are active in scouting, the opportunity to participate in an inter-cultural project which will be held in Malta between the 15-20 August 2016. In this way all of the participating youths will have the possibility to raise their awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries. We believe that this challenge will enrich our personal character and skills, by giving us the opportunity to share and learn new scouting methods and skills through informal activities. The project will aim to empower us and our fellow youths to actively apply and demonstrate the values of multicultural integration and tolerance within our the future, including the workplace and our community. The objectives of the project are: - To enhance our inter-cultural awareness- To generate a more positive attitude towards the EU values- To further promote non-formal learning- A new challenge to improve our self-esteem and creativityThis project will promote inter-cultural awareness by uniting us with fellow youths coming from a different culture through dialogue and non-formal activities. Secondly, we believe that by means of this project we will continue to raise awareness amongst our fellow youths about the benefits of multiculturalism in society. We will also formulate a pro-active mentality towards the social integration of people that come from different cultural backgrounds. Through the various activities, we will be encouraged to become informed about the EU principles, form opinions and take a pro-active approach towards a more inclusive society while being exposed to the beauty and celebration of different cultures. We will also help us address the issue of multiculturalism and irregular immigration, which is currently being experienced by the majority of the European countries and a hot topic amongst us youths. Activities will promote awareness on the European Identity and the EU values of human dignity and free movement through discussions and visits to the entities responsible for saving lives of irregular immigrants at sea. The discussions found in this project to help us improve our communication skills, be more independent and be more respectful and helpful towards others irrespective of religion, culture, skin colour, social roots and language. By participating and contributing to the management and implementation of the project we will also gain essential entrepreneurial skills such as leadership skills, teamwork.Through this project we seek to enforce the scouting values and the 'learning by doing' approach, which focuses on non-formal and informal learning. This is very important considering that most of us are still attending school and are therefore most of the time we are involved in formal educative methods. Although the scouting world already uses a non-formal education approach, this youth exchange will give a new international exchange platform that has been lacking within our association. This will be a new experience for us to work so closely with youths coming from a different country on a shared project. Finally this mobility project should help us appreciate the qualities that make the EU unique and that sometimes everyone takes for granted, such as peace, stability and human rights, which our forefathers struggled so hard for.By implementing this project, both our organisations can portray this youth exchange as a model example to all of our youth members and the communities we operate in. We believe that scouts associations play an active role in the community and thanks to such a project, we will not only be able to develop long-lasting connections but also give all the participants an opportunity to meet and learn together with other scouts coming from another country.
