Breaking Stereotypes Building Europe
Start date: May 2, 2015,
End date: Feb 1, 2016
The project takes place in Palermo (Sicily, Italy) from January the 20 to 28 June 2015. The countries involved in the exchange will be 4, with 5 participants plus 1 leader from every country, for a total of 20 participants and 4 leaders.
Stereotypes, theatre, social inclusion, creativity and understanding of cultural diversity are the key words of the exchange. Our scenario is the multicultural city of Palermo with his history of different dominations and the current significant flow of migrants. Today the town is a melting pot where citizens live in a very close contact with several cultures. This reality provides the opportunity to discuss the concept of the stereotype. The issue will be discussed through the stage of a theatre, setting par excellence of the creation, the destruction and the dissimulation. In the place where the mask has born, we will try to understand why and when in the real life a person chooses to use a mask and how the others judge it, creating a stereotype.
The aim of the exchange is to raise awareness about the integration process driving European youth beyond the appearance. Thanks to the instrument of the theatre the participants will experience the different points of view on the perception of the “other”. During the activities they will be able to share and compare it with other youths coming from different countries and all together they will create a performance that would represent their European consciousness.
During the exchange non-formal methods will be used. The participants will be involved in the activities that will use the “learning by doing” methods and they will discover and assimilate how to act in a simple exhibition. In line with these methods the participants will be involved in group works, workshops and tours around the beautiful city of Palermo. O ne of our facilitators is an actor from a well-known acting company in Palermo expert in group works and role games.
All the experiences, photos and the video of the performance will be edited in a documentary video which will include the comments of the participants during the different steps of the exchange. The video will be used to give visibility to the initiative and to spread European consciousness.
It is provided a APV from 17th to 20th of May 2015 in Palermo.
