Biosensing of heavy metal pollution at both sides of Romanian and Hungarian border by agriculturally important capsicum plant (Biosensor Plant)
Start date: Jan 31, 2011, End date: Jul 29, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project's main aim is to develop a methodology to measure heavy metal contamination in capsicum - paprika - the region's main cash crop.Specific objectives:1. Developing a biosensing method for detection of heavy metal toxicity2. Selection of heavy metal resistant capsicum varietiesThe main activities of the project are: the detailed work plan shared by the partners (sample preparation for greenhouse experiments, in vitro laboratory experiments, field experiments and sample collection, selection of heavy metal resistant cultivars), elaboration and implementation of the joint action plan for limiting the impact on both sides of the border (comparative study regarding the legislation and regulations in the field in Hungary and Romania, measures identification for protecting target groups based on local administration agreement (city halls) within the Arad-Mako corridor in order to limit the effects of intense road traffic on the environment, set up of the action plan in order to limit the effects of intense road traffic on the environment, plan implementation by the local administration and target groups)The target group includes farmers and merchandising companies of the Romanian-Hungarian border. From the project benefit rural communities in the Arad-Timis (approx. 20 000), local communities in the region Csongrad (approx. 20 000), approximately 180 students from the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture, Faculty Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, 50 teachers and researchers, staff of local and regional authorities (town halls and city councils, Prefecture of Timis, the Agency for Rural Development and Environment Protection Agency).
