Project description
The focus of our project targeted the increasing challenge for young people to live and communicate with regards to a European environment. In most cases the language used is English. Through our school partnerships with Piestany/Slovakia and Oslo/Norway we have experienced the necessity of sufficient knowledge of a foreign language as well as the skills to actually communicate in that foreign language. The latter is often restrained by inhibitions to use a foreign language. For that reason we want to offer new students at our school the opportunity to practice the English language in other subjects additionally to the English classes and to use it without pressure to perform. So the project's aim was the introduction of "English as a working language" (CLIL) in half of the compulsory subjects starting with one class of 25 students with the school year of 2016/2017.
As a consequence, the key aspect of our project was the training and continuing education for those teachers of our staff who will teach CLIL classes in the upcoming years. As our partner organisation we chose the DELTA Language Training & Consultancy Ltd with their office in Norwich, where eight of our teachers participated in an intensive CLIL training funded with means of the Erasmus+ project. Two further participants could be funded with money from additional sponsors. The focus was not just linguistic excellence but rather the acquisition of a subject-dependent methodology, which constitutes an important tool for imparting the language. As the participants' reports show, the training program has sparked enthusiasm for the CLIL program, and the passion and motivation of the future CLIL teaching staff is palpable through a certain team spirit and a common excitement. This enthusiasm has been increased by the great interest that the parents of fourth graders of primary schools within our catchment area have shown, resulting in 57 applications for our first CLIL class. Our specifically designed application process enabled us to select 25 students who will start with CLIL in the upcoming school year.
It is necessary to note that our above mentioned partner schools - after changes in staff - are not interested in an intensive school exchange anymore and have therefore not played any further role for the project execution.
