BILINGUAL EXCELLENCE IN BARGAS

Our school, IES Julio Verne, is located in a working class neighborhood of Bargas, Toledo, in Spain, where more than 700 students, aged 12 to 18 are being taught. As it is located in a disadvantaged area, a great effort has been done for several years, to decrease the high level of school failure and reach valuable levels of academic achievement. Nowadays, these targets are slowly been raised through structured plans of harmonious relations at school, which have successfully been working for ten years now. Substantial efforts made on our Bilingual Project, offered to a majority of students, have also added a big amount of quality to our school. Besides the valuable fact that all staff is involved in the main school challenges, together with the search of new ways of working and creative solutions to educational targets, teacher training is definitely our main need, focusing especially on the improvement of foreign languages skills. Due to the socioeconomic crisis, indeed affecting our area, and the slow technological development associated, another demand is closely connected with the knowledge of new technologies and computer learning, so as our students could get better skills and high levels of accuracy on this subject. Strongly connected with our enthusiasm in ameliorating teaching and learning quality, we also consider that, innovation, culture and creativity are important targets which can fill all the training needs of our staff at school. As it has been done for several years, in a first step, criteria for choosing courses and their suitability are being discussed and agreed with the principal. Eventually, teachers receiving training activities develop their knowledge in teacher groups which are specially created according to their personal teaching aims and necessities at school. Finally, our proposals for decreasing scholar failure figures basically concentrate on the improvement in the formative quality of a majority of students. That is why the proposed activities are based on foreign languages knowledge, innovative methodologies, projects lidership and new technological challenges. We also promote the necessity to know and learn other cultures, to stress on creative thinking and intellectual curiosity and to improve our students´ European feeling, always focusing on strong democratic values. Our objective is to keep on improving the quality of teaching and learning in IES Julio Verne through the progress of our successful current programs, such us the Bilingual one, which we want to upgrade to its excellence. Following the above explained educational path, we really expect our school ranking to keep on improving to, finally, converge with other more culturally advantaged schools with higher rankings.
