Petra Haak has been a French teacher since 1994. She studied French at Groningen University. Since 1996 she has been teaching at Ludgercollege Doetinchem, conducting mainly classes for senior pupils at pre-university level.
There is only opportunity to speak French during classes and Mrs Haak’s language skills deteriorate, since she has to adept her use of the French language to the pupils’ level. Besides, she notices her pronunciation slowly becoming ‘more Dutch’ due to lack of contact with an intense French environment. Therefore Mrs Haak feels it very important to enrol in a language course on a regular basis in order to keep her language skills at a certain level. This is naturally to the benefit of the pupils.
Twice before Mrs Haak has followed such a course, and she finds it a very rewarding experience, enabling her to conduct her classes in French with more confidence and enthusiasm.
Ludgercollege is employing several different programs in order to raise language education to a higher level. The school is member of Anglia Network, there is a language assistant (native speaker) for French present during many classes, and there are exchange programs with German pupils as well as a mail-project with Spanish pupils. The French department will be LINQ school in the future. Additionally, we intend to establish a ‘Taaldorp’ within our school and we are exploring possibilities to start an exchange program with a school in France.
All classes are conducted as much as possible in the target language, and therefore it is to be expected that the pupils’ language skills will benefit from a language course for Mrs Haak.
