Better Boss - rehtoreiden täydennyskoulutusta Briteissä
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

Background:In Turku Education Division the internationalization of principals is regarded as a way to develop management. In this project we want to give our principals international perspective to management. Earlier, City of Turku has hosted two groups of British headteachers who have come to Turku to explore the Finnish education system and the operations model in Turku Education Division. Our principals who are now involved in this project, have invited those British headteachers to their schools to show them the Finnish way and at the same time, to learn from the British colleagues. During those visits it turned out that both sides, the Finnish and the British, would have a lot to learn from each other. Objectives:The objective of this project is to improve the management skills of the principals in Turku Education Division. By absorbing in the British way of school teaching the principals in Turku get new perspective and boost to their own work, and they also learn to respect more their own working environment. Through this project, the principals will get new practices to many things, e.g. cooperation between school and parents, whole school day from early morning till late afternoon, teaching arrangements and teaching methods. Their language and cultural competence strengthens. The aim is also to offer principals further education in the topical issues of their work.Target group:The target group is seven primary school principals who will attend a structured course in Great Britain. The seven schools involved in this project are different as to their size and emphasis. The careers and the amount of international experience vary among the principals. In this project, we aim to create a network where the principals can have dialogue with each other and enjoy peer support. Activities:- Arranging a breafing to the principals, discussion about the objectives and wishes about the contents of the course- Agreeing the contents and timetable of the course with the British course organizer- Pre-departure orientation for the principals- Travel arrangements, implementation of the course mobilities- Feedback conversations and dissemination of the results- ReportingMethodology:The international team of the Education Division will coordinate this project. It takes care of the practical travel arrangements, handles the project management and runs the pre-departure orientation. The principals will have to make the report after completing the course. Results and impact:The principals will learn a lot from different topics, e.g. cross-curricular teaching, functionality, multiculturalism and cooperation between school and parents. Our schools get new operations models to make the new curriculum visible and to help everyday school routines. The managerial skills of the principals will improve and the teachers are able to carry out wide-ranging multidisciplinary modules. The principals will learn how to look at their work from another point of view and also to challenge their own working models. As a result, there will be international contacts which the school can benefit from.In the long run, the impact will be seen as a change in the operational culture of the school, e.g. in teaching arrangements, teaching methods and strengthening the language and cultural competence in every step. The cooperation between school and parents will have new operations models. The school will be able to offer better possibilities to active and safe school day, from early morning till late afternoon.
