Beneath the Mask
Start date: Sep 20, 2014, End date: Dec 19, 2014 PROJECT  FINISHED

….'Who are you?' said the Caterpillar.  'I -I hardly know, sir, just at present - at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.' Lewis Carroll: Alice in Wonderland The mask as a primordial symbol can be found in various cultures across the continents and during the centuries. In particular, the mask was used either as a symbol of mockery and disguise or as an item used for hiding the face or even as a means of communication with the gods and the dead. Nowadays, we disguise ourselves either to hide or to comply with social conventions, or to "liberate" us by playing a role driven from desire or curiosity. Youth Mobility Center and the “Mythwalkers”, being influenced by the present sociopolitical situation, but also driven from personal needs and interests, we decided to use the symbol of the mask as a means of exploring the concept of diversity. For this purpose, we aim to organize this youth exchange calling for the participation of 7 young people from 4 different countries, aged 18-25 years, who will be invited along with us to reflect upon the following questions: How many masks did you wear today? Do you have just a single “self”? How many roles do you undertake to play in your everyday life? Are you the oppressed one or the oppressor? To which extent do you act freely while being with your colleagues, friends or with your lover? Have you ever felt alienated from your surrounding? How do you treat someone with different social or ethnic background than yours? By using methods of non-formal learning, and mainly theater and its techniques, we intend to explore, with the participants’, the concept of diversity that exists inside and outside of us. More specifically, through workshops, physical theater, the narration of personal experiences/stories by participants, storytelling and dramatization of stories, music and photography, we will reflect upon the concept of diversity in an individual (our personal identity and its many versions) and social level (different cultures, religions, ethnicities, sexual preferences).
