Being young in Europe – Comparing the life of teenagers in the present and in the past

Being young in Europe - Comparing the life of teenagers in different parts of Europe in the present and in the pastThe pupils, between 12 and 17 years old, should know both their own and their partners´ historical, geographical and social backgrounds. We intended to make the pupils aware of their own situation by finding out intercultural similarities and differences among different European countries. They should develop a stronger feeling towards being part of a common Europe and, at the same time, increase their understanding of people from other European countries as well as of migrants and minorities. This project should widen the horizon of the participating pupils and their parents as well as that of the participating teachers. It should increase tolerance and respect between different cultures and it should be an important step towards overcoming prejudices between countries and cultures. Topics in the first project year "Being young in Europe in the present":Introduction of the partner countries, survey about free time activities of teenagers, glossary with everyday phrases in English and in the languages of the partners, living conditions, school life, common CD "European Charts" with the favourite titles each school had chosen.Second project year "Being young in Europe in the past": Pupils gained better knowledge of their grandparents´ lives about half a century ago by interviewing them. The illustrated documents were translated into English and printed in the common book "When my grandparents were my age". Exploring this historical perspective they could see the changes in the concepts of former generations in different political, historical, social and economical situations. They should realize that a united Europe is a peace-securing factor.Working language was English. So pupils learned that the use of foreign languages is not only a matter within the classroom, but rather something to find new friends and communicate with them.
