Being Europeans today
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

In 2012 the European Union received the Peace Nobel Prize which was a reward at the end of a long path towards peace for a Europe which was marked by wars during the 20th century. "May the example of those who were exterminated here between 1933 and 1945 because of their fight against National Socialism unite the living in their defense of peace and freedom and in reverence of human dignity." This inscription in French, English, German, and Russian on a memorial plaque at the entrance to the Dachau concentration camp, not only reminds us of the horrors of fascism and war, but also asks for a duty to remember. It invites us to ask ourselves about the lessons that history taught us. This is why this project has firstly the aim to remind of this time of rivalries which bloodied and divided Europe. Secondly, it has the aim to explain the persistent desire for peace which has shown itself after 1945. Thirdly, this project emphases Europe's division during the Cold War, the success of freedom movements in the Eastern Block and the unification of East and West which is still to be perfected. European peace is accompanied by the creation of a European citizenship which is sometimes difficult to pinpoint. This project unites three schools from three countries from three symbolic parts of Europe, whose histories and mentalities were marked by wars of which stigmata are still visible. THREE SCHOOLS, THREE WARS, ONE AIM: PEACE AND UNION This will be transported to the pupils, the youth of Europe, three classes per year in 2015 to 2017, more than 150 pupils, who must not only remember, but must also have the knowledge of the creation of Europe by acquiring this European citizenship of which they will be active participants. This project also allows them to discover other cultures, represents real opportunities to practise languages and ICT and other thoughts by actively taking part, and by experiencing strong moments of TOGETHERNESS.
