Becult Open (BeO)

European service sector needs mobile young people with strong communicative and intercultural competencies. There has been a clear need to create a cultural and lingual preparation tool for students travelling to foreign countries for their placement. The LdV Pilot project Becult and its successor BeCult Extend were created as an online tool to support the learning process of young learners who are getting familiar with new languages and working cultures. Produced video and exercise material fit the level descriptions of European language portfolio levels A1 and A2. Cultural part depicts important part of daily life in project target countries. Professional service sectors at BeCult include restaurant kitchen and service, hotel, retail and tourism.BECULT OPEN has four new target groups: VET professionals, students of car mechanics, students of Russian and Swedish and advanced students in the service industry. The purpose of BeCult Open is to create clear transfer of innovation for these groups. First, an additional language learning level B (“Independent user") in English will be created for retail, kitchen, service, hotel and tourism sectors. This transfers the tool into completely new target groups such as advanced or graduated students, professional experts and teachers. Second, a large-scale national training of trainers (ToT) aims to transfer the tool to entirely new languages and professional sectors. This is made possible by the technical expertise of Mediamaisteri Group, which adjusts Moodle to facilitate independent uploading of material via an innovative user interface. Service sector A1 and A2 material in languages important for Finland, Swedish and Russian material will be produced and uploaded by the Finnish and Estonian partners using the new upload tool. Third, the Finnish partner will produce A1 and A2 language material for car mechanics in English. Finally, a clearly defined course description of BeCult content connected with classroom cultural training modules will aid any VET institution and their teachers to include BeCult as part of their course tray or curricula. The partnership consists of previous Becult project member countries (FI, DE, IT, FR, EE, ES) with an addition of two new partners North West Academy from United Kingdom and Finnish Mediamaisteri Group for Moodle development. These partners will add the necessary dimension dealing with both the additional language level and e-learning platform development. The new partners will be of fundamental importance and fully integrated. The main outcome will be open social media learning platform on which the user can learn different languages (A1-A2, B) in their professional contexts. New languages and occupational areas are to be added through the uploading tool. The site will be co-managed by the initial production team after project launch. The envisaged impact is greatly improved lingual and cultural knowledge base in main target groups.
