‘Be YOURSELF – Pride for Youth’
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: Jan 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The training course aims to provide opportunities for youth organisations to explore deeper the participation of LGBT* young people in their projects, communities and wider Europe. To explore the challenges and obstacles for LGBT* young people and to plan concrete actions to help overcome these obstacles. The idea for this training came about through my involvement as a trainer in trainings on inclusion for youth workers (Mobility Taster organised by SALTO Inclusion) and our efforts to create a LGBT* aware and inclusive youth organisation. The idea was hatched to host an international training course that explored these challenges in more detail and allowed for youth organisations to have the space to learn more about the issues of the LGBT* community and provide a space to find partners to organise their own projects. The objectives of the project are:• To learn about the issues and challenges LGBT* young people face in their daily life • To share knowledge, skills and experiences of LGBT* organisations already working on the ground with organisations new to this issue• To explore new approaches in inclusive practices in relation to LGBT* issues• To explore how to expand awareness about LGBT* among young people in own locality• To share and implement this learning with their projects upon their return to their home country• To plan and develop concrete Erasmus+ actions supporting LGBT* young peopleWe will host 27 participants from 16 projects and from 12 different countries. There was a huge response to our ‘call for partners’ for this project and rather than narrow the countries down to a smaller amount we decided to accept nearly all projects who wanted to participate and limit the number of participants to 2 persons per organisation except for organisations where there were two partners in the same country (Turkey/Italy/Romania) We believe this gives a wider scope to the activity with the maximum opportunity of finding partners to develop projects with and also to hear the experiences of a wide variety of countries and organisations particularly countries from EECA and Albania. We decided to allow many Irish participants as this is still a very actual issue in Ireland. The projects are also very varied with youth organisations attending who have said ‘Our institution has never been dealing with LGBT* questions before, but we would like to expand awareness about LGBT* among young people in our local environment, to more experienced organisations such as pink Armenia, GOSHH, PRISMA, stichting Diversiteit and GenderZ who said ‘Those who take part in the project can definitely share they experience, as every week there are events, and young LGBT* people discuss things that bother them, things they get motivated with and/or want to share with other community members’. The activities will include team building, creative ways of exploring the challenges faced by LGBT* groups by using ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’, World café, partnership building activities and an Erasmus+ workshops. The methodologies we will use will be creative, inclusive and participatory.Participants will have a deeper knowledge of the challenges and obstacles facing LGBT* young people and the competences to support young people in overcoming these challenges. The result will be concrete plans for projects that explore the issues in a local context and concrete plans for future co-operation in international projects.Impact will be more inclusive youth work for the organisations, with more support structures in place for their young people and youth workers/leaders who have increased competences in supporting LGBT* young peopleLong-term benefits will be the implementation of inclusive strategies to tackle discrimination and for a more inclusive Europe. We will explore dissemination plans for the local community e.g. talks, radio interviews etc, also dissemination plans for the projects websites.
