Start date: Apr 1, 2016, End date: Mar 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Why Not? together with 3 organisations from Poland, Spain and Italy, namely: Teatr Brama, AFAIJ and Aurive will be implementing a European Voluntary Service project. The project will last 1 year (12 months) and involve 5 volunteers in an initiative that will benefit the volunteers participating, their sending organisations, Why Not? (the hosting organisation) and the local community in Malta within which the volunteers will be volunteering. One of the participants will be a volunteer with disability, two of the volunteers will be youths who have been out of employment for a long time. Why Not? is an organisation that relies heavily on the dedication and input of volunteers - both local and foreign. Our mission as an NGO is to improve people's lifestyles by giving them the tools to live more holistically and in tune with nature. A part of this is teaching people how to be active citizens and live sustainable and environmentally-friendly lives. Volunteers from different backgrounds bring with them new perspectives and ideas, that we welcome. It will also give us the opportunity to make contacts with foreign partners which we can learn from and collaborate with for future projects. The project objectives are: 1. Helping volunteers acquiring competences2. Promoting self-respect and respect for others 3. Raising environmental awareness locally and abroad Regarding the accommodation of the volunteers, they will have the possibility to choose between living in the Creativity Vortex in a private cabin or in a apartment near the Vortex. The Vortex has a private cabin on a 12 hectare plot of land that houses an eco-farm and other environmentally-friendly structures. During their stay in Malta they will be helping out at the farm while also helping us as an organisation with our weekly activities. They will thus have have the opportunity to help us organise such events and to participate in them and enjoy the results of their work. Volunteers are from the 20-30 year old age bracket and were selected on the basis of their appreciation for nature-related and activities such as permaculture, sustainable living and organic food. The project will be an interesting experience not only because the volunteers will be immersed in an eco-friendly lifestyle but also because they will have the opportunity to meet young people from different countries and grow as individuals. Why Not? has been hosting volunteers for 5 years and we pride ourselves on the community atmosphere we build with our volunteers. Week after week the volunteers will be helping us with maintaining the eco-farm and performing other hands-on activities, while also contributing their ideas and creativity to the activities we organise locally. Weekly, they will be helping us prepare the spaces we manage for the activities held there, help us in maintaining our eco-farm, assist in the several types of environment and relaxation themed workshops we organise regularly and also have the opportunity to help in and participate in public events that attract hundreds of people. It will be a unique personal development experience for all the volunteers. As organisations, we will improve our capacity to implement such EU funded projects while increasing our contact with foreign organisations, to constantly enhance the quality of the activities and projects we implement. We look forward to hosting these volunteers and walking alongside them on this learning journey. The volunteers will grow as individuals by learning new skills, meeting new people, being immersed in an alternative lifestyle that is not mainstream and contributing to building the vision we have of a society that lives in full respect of nature. Aside from this impact on a local level, internationally this will benefit our project partners as well. It will offer them a new volunteering experience for their members and also the possibility to collaborate with other European organisations to implement a transnational project that is in line with their aims and values. After implementing this project and learning best practices from our project partners we intend to start applying more regularly for EU funding for our projects, to increase the benefit and widen the impact of our activities as an NGO. We look forward to going through this journey together with our volunteers.
