BALANCE - health coaching for adult education professionals
Start date: Oct 1, 2012,

The current societal debate is characterised by terms such as burnout, anxiety and mental stress caused by a constantly accelerating economy and society and high workload. Even if adult learning in Europe varies greatly by country and region there are quite a lot similarities adult education staff has to manage: a steady change of and mostly very heterogeneous participants, enormous changes in learning and teaching methods, new learning offers and little curricula, the need to combine formal, non-formal and informal learning, as well as to provide guidance and counselling. Additionally they work frequently with people who suffer from several problems who furthermore have to participate in training courses involuntarily. All these factors cause to stressful situations for many professionals in adult education.Furthermore exist numerous adult education providers depending on national development strategies such as job-support-programmes. Their course offers are mainly financed by public funds, targeting e.g. the qualification and integration of unemployed people into the labour market. By the still ongoing European debt crisis, savings in the active employment policy will be conducted.Teachers, trainers and coaches in adult education are directly affected by these circumstances and have to cope with it often independently. More effort is needed to identify needs and problems and to support them in their every day work life. The project Balance supported professionals in adult education to better cope with the demands of their profession through developing a health coaching training course for adult education professionals. To serve this aim the training course was designed and distributed among AE and VET providers, train-the-trainer institutions, trade unions of education, health organisations. By doing so BALANCE wanted to enrich adult education through an inter-disciplinary approach bringing together practitioners in the fields of education and health.
