Attractive Public Areas: Competitiveness. Heritage. urban Environments and Sustainability (Strategic cluster on managing and developing public areas in NWE to improve their attractiveness and economic viability) (APACHES)

AIM: To demonstrate how transnational cooperation has improved the economic viability of NWE cities. regions and communities by managing and developing public areas to enhance their attractiveness to skilled people. visitors and investors. and to help set priorities for future Interreg funding programmes relating to urban development and regeneration. The proposed cluster addresses the programme’s ambition to promote stronger communication and dissemination of its project results across NWE and the wider EU. This includes as customers all NWE regions. cities and communities. including those not participating in Interreg. Achieving this aim involves enabling stakeholders to access easily the knowledge from Priority 4 projects. and benefit directly from the outcomes. These activities are formalised within the cluster as 4 objectives. underpinning the main project aim. as follows: OBJECTIVES: • O1. Document and disseminate project results including new tools. policies. processes and other innovations (Actions 1 and 5). • O2. Evaluate project outputs and outcomes (Actions 2 and 6). • O3. Integrate and validate project results (Actions 3 and 7). • O4. Establish shared. strategic priorities for future EU funding programmes (Actions 4 and 8). The cluster will joining up the lessons and innovation from different projects on urban development. improving the ‘big picture’ links and coordinated promotional and cooperation work enabling stakeholders to access and apply knowledge and results. Achievements: The APACHES Cluster has collated a range of best practices in the field of urban attractiveness and competitiveness. These 'Innovations' can be seen on the website. or summarised below;- VALUE Added; Demonstrates how to combine strategic planning with local involvement to improve social cohesion and economic performance. It has delivered innovative tools to support integration, resulting in more legitimate, open and efficient decisions. It trained up a team of Local EU Champions to promote the project.Innovation; EU Champions - VALUE; Contributes to the economic prosperity, sustainability and cultural identity of North West Europe in increasingly competitive global markets. This has been done by forming and supporting new clusters in the Cultural, Creative, Countryside, Recreation, and Hospitality (CCCRH) sectors, using uniqueness of place as a binding force and overcoming barriers to regional and transnational collaboration.Innovation; Online Green City Tool PORTICO; The project stimulates urban development in historic cities by linking the knowledge economy to the experience economy, developing and testing new techniques and carrying out unconventional urban projects with mixed partnerships.Innovation; Digital Story Telling MANDIE; Has developed methods to enhance the attractiveness and economic performance of district centres in North West Europe. It tackles the problems of selected district centres in North West Europe in close collaboration with municipalities, universities and associations.Innovation; District Centre Management Training CURE; ‘Creative Urban Renewal in Europe’ and has facilitated triggered growth of the creative economy in decayed urban areas in medium-sized cities in North West Europe (NWE).Innovation; Creative Zone Innovator LIVELY CITIES; Has strengthened communities by reclaiming public space for public use. Following economic crises, a lot of cities around North West Europe (NWE) have launched large and expensive urban renewal programmes.Innovation; Urban Lifestyle Point COLLABOR8; contributes to the economic prosperity, sustainability and cultural identity of NWE in increasingly competitive global markets. This has been done by forming and supporting new clusters in the Cultural, Creative, Countryside, Recreation, and Hospitality sectors using uniqueness of place as a binding force and overcoming barriers to regional and transnational collaboration.Innovation; Ambassador Scheme for Tourism MANAGE+; Deals with the (post-investment) management of regenerated cultural and industrial heritage areas developed into attractive destinations.
