@Languages: Virtual Learning Languages in a Multicultural Professional Environment

The project will develop an internet-based, language-training package targeted at trade personnel in SMEs. The training aims to improve employees' understanding and written and oral expression in English, as the main language of international trade, with regard to the specific language requirements of their profession. Employees will be familiarised with the background of their particular work in, and the cultural norms of, the different countries with which they do business. Training will be offered, in EN, from basic through to an advanced level and users will be able to use learner-centred and flexible tools to acquire and improve upon their language skills. Personal workplans will be developed to facilitate the most effective use of language training. The content of the training package will be determined following an analysis of the language capabilities and training needs of SME employees in the partner countries. The training package itself will centre on the development of core web-based modules, with each module lasting no more than forty hours. The virtual training environment will be developed alongside the training modules. The modules and the virtual training software will be tested on SME employees in the partner countries and improvements will be made to the end product in line with these test results. The project will further investigate the possibility of extending the language-training package to other languages beyond EN. Dissemination will be in EN and the languages of the partner countries and will be through the medium of the project website, specific project leaflets and a public conference.
