“Ion Simionescu” Middle School is a comprehensive school in Iasi, which has earned a good reputation among county schools, along its 35 years of existence. Our disadvantageous socio-economic context has led to an increase in the risk of early school leave among pupils. The school is located in a neighborhood with low standards of living. Therefore, our institution has focused on a complex strategy to ensure equal opportunities to good quality education for all pupils and to increase motivation to complete their compulsory education by improving and internationalizing the professional training of our teachers. The aim of this project is to respond to the needs of our institution of preventing school failure and early school leave, by building a professional team, capable of creating and implementing an educational strategy centered on developing our pupils' key competences and lifelong learning. Our teachers’ major priorities are enhancing professional competences in conformity with the changes in the national and international educational system, sharing good practice examples in the field of education, assimilating innovative teaching methods, capable of preventing early school leave in a lifelong learning societyIn order to achieve these objectives, 11 teachers from our institution have developed a professional training strategy in 3 European countries to share experience and good practice examples:-The Czech Republic (which has similar conditions to Romania, but it is a leader in reducing early leave percentage) - ,,Task based learning" course;- Spain (which is in a different development area and has very good results in the eradication of early school leave)-,,Improving classroom atmosphere and student motivation in school" course;-Portugal ( which has a similar early leave percentage as Romania, although it is a South-Western European country) - ,,Change Making Educators" course. As a result of the good practice exchange, gaining competences, abilities and information, of analyzing the experience of the three types of educational policy, we will reach another goal of our institution, which refers to ensuring the European dimension and internationalization of our work. The information, good practice examples and our own achievements will be disseminated towards:- Pupils, who will benefit from our materials and new teaching ideas by means of educational activities, workshops, debates and briefings;- Teachers, who will benefit from our colleagues’ entire experience through workshops, articles in our school magazine, debates, school webpage and blogs;- Parents, through activities within “The Parents’ School” project, thematic meetings and parents’ forum;- Partner schools and institutions in Romania and abroad, using fliers, brochures, Power Point presentations and documentaries- Iasi County Board of Education, Iasi Teaching-Staff Resource Center, Iasi County Center of Resources and Educational Assistance through a conference disseminating the results of the project- Local community through articles in local newspapers, local radio and television interviews. The knowledge, competences and abilities, the innovative teaching methods assimilated in this complex professional training programme will be applied not only within our current educational activities, but also within the projects of our school which will be developed as part of the new professional strategy for ensuring equal educational opportunities and preventing early school leave (the main added value of this project):- “Equal Opportunities for Everybody”, a regional project, the activities of which aim at lowering the risk of school failure and ensuring our pupils’ school performance; it also provides some club activities;- “Young Changemakers”–a personal development project for the pupils at risk;-“Parents’ School”, a regional project which will provide the informational and educational support for the parents of the pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. In order to share the experience we have gained and the results of our training programme, we will:- Organize an online International Symposium (“Educational strategies which promote equal opportunities for all pupils with a view to preventing early school leave”) which all our Comenius and eTwinning partners will be invited to join in;- Publish a scientific work/report in Romanian and English, containing all the contributions presented within the symposium;- Create a syllabus for an optional school subject (“Learning Motivation”);- develop/publish a scientific study “Effective Learning Techniques”);- Develop a training course (“Strategies to prevent early school leaving”) through Iasi Teaching-Staff Resource Center.
