Arts and Action!
Start date: May 20, 2016, End date: Aug 19, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project aimed to address high youth unemployment and reduce social exclusion through arts (music, poetry, photography, story telling, painting) and action (volunteering). Through the project young people have learned to develop themselves as caring and compassionate citizens. The project was triggered by recent local responses to the migrant crisis affecting Europe but as discussions progressed, YP felt that social exclusion was an issue that was ever prevalent in their countries. They wanted to understand and develop more of an active role in reducing this. In Spain the young people carried out a survey amongst their colleagues at the start of the project. 100% of those interviewed agreed that poverty has increased in their environment due to a rise in unemployment. Other causes attributed to poverty by them was the increase in immigration and the lack of capacitation of people for work. 98% of them agreed that they themselves, and not just governments and public bodies, must participate in solving the issue of social exclusion. Therefore, they concentrated on working with homeless people, immigrants and elderly people who suffer from being lonely. In Britain, the aim was rather to raise the awareness of the participants as we felt that we live fairly oblivious to what goes on. We knew about it, but we hardly thought it had anything to do with us, let alone think that we could do something about it. By the end, all the British participants, went home with a clear idea of something objective and realistic that they could do to improve the issue in their environment. Roisin was going to invite her friends to her house to tell them all the things that she has learnt. Maria, who led a photography workshop said she will offer herself to her school to run the workshop with all the students in groups of 10. In Poland, the young people were worried about the difficulties that they will face finding a job in the future. This project was an excellent chance for all the participants to review their CV, to add some newly acquired, very valuable skills that they hadn't thought about.
