Artists’ Books on Tour - Artists’ Competition and Mobile Museum
Start date: May 31, 2010,
For centuries, artists have expressed themselves in the field of books and printing, but adequate recognition and critical acceptance of "Artists' books" as a genre in its own right only came in the 20th century. The project promotes contemporary art and artists and raises public awareness of this genre of art which is, for many artists, a central and important form of practice. It focuses on artists' books as "books or book-like objects over the final appearance of which an artist has had a high degree of control; where the book is intended as a work of art in itself". The project is segmented into 7 core activities: a) Kick-off. b) Preparation of the project's artists' book competition. c) Dissemination of the call to artists. d) International jury and awarding in Vienna/AT. e) Implementation of an expert group advising on the vision of "nomadic museums/mobile galleries". f) Digitalisation and online database. g) Creation of an "Artists' Books Mobile Museum" and presentation this at the exhibition venues of the partners. h) Concept and schedule of a follow-up programme. The project consortium consists of cultural institutions which have long-term experience in and valuable collections of artists' books, provide valuable know-how in terms of international relations and are capable of creating best-practice in presenting and promoting this art form. The project will cover more than the co-organiser countries, as artists working in other parts of Europe will be progressively involved via "Facebook to connect artists from all over Europe. The exhibition will be implemented as a state-of-the-art mobile gallery presenting the authentic art objects, supported by multimedia and surrounding architectural components. The tour of this new "Artist's Books Mobile Museum" through Europe will start in the 2nd project year in the co-organising countries. The project will create a concept to continue the tour in other countries as a follow-up of the project.
