Art as civic action
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Mar 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This training course, Art as Civic Action, will take place in Berlin, Germany between the 6th and 13th October, 2014. It will bring together 27 multipliers from 5 countries: Germany, Serbia, Moldova, Greece, and Ukraine. Our targets are multipliers in the artistic and political sphere who are engaging with young people in the course of their working environment. We aim to bring together organisations and collectives, which use artistic means to address social and political issues on a local, national and European level. The European political process is complex, and often perceived as far away from the citizens. Citizens of Europe e.V. see civil dialogue and engagement as a means to bring the individual and community closer to the decision making process. By doing so, the citizen can bring about the change needed to have a real influence on the issues that matter in our expanding European society. The theme of the training is how art can benefit constructive political discussions. The training course is based on non-formal education and self-directed learning approaches, learning by experience, task based learning and pro-active participation methods. We will work on supporting creativity within groups and individuals, engaging the participants in dicussion and debate over the interaction between art and politics, while simultaneously offering concrete learning outcomes through workshops, study visits and the opportunity to develop transferrable skills such as presentation techniques, creative concept development, implementation of public actions and working in an intercultural environment. The focal point of the training course is the creation and implementation of a social- political art piece, related to a current pan-European issue, which will be installed in the environment surrounding the training venue. By doing so, we aim to make the public aware of European issues by providing focal points through the city to explore issues, mobilise new players and inspire action, this will strengthen the bond between local communities and the greater European environment. The skills, knowledge and competenes gained can be brought back to the participants organisations and disseminated in their local environment thus raising the awareness and acting as multipliers for the project results. After the training course participants shall have developed themselves within the area of social and civic competences. They will have learned how to work together with people from various cultural and social backgrounds. By being an active citizen and reflect over European issues in a artistic way, it will encourage our participants to take part in civic life also on a local level in their respective countries.
