AQUA-RET 2 - Vocational Training in Marine Renewable Energy Technologies

Aqua-RET 2 aimed to update & further develop its innovative training materials for the marine renewables sector, targeting also new audience and wider geographic locations by: a) identifying new needs of the sector and ancillary businesses, on a sectoral and geographical basis, by means of targeted needs analysis; b) adapting and developing existing material to bridge the gap between competence requirements and labour market needs; c) piloting the resulting new courses in new locations and between sectors; d) creating a innovative mapping tool allowing stakeholders to see the new skills/knowledge/competencies required, and which knowledge gaps the Aqua-RET training can address; and e) developing an assessment system linked to the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for the marine renewable energy sector using a learning outcomes approach. The courses are market relevant, geared to anticipate skills needs, an LLL aim and recommended in the Bordeaux Communique (Nov 2008) on VET.The 6 partners (5 countries) were a well-balanced mix of regions, stakeholders, social partners and international expertise which includes CRES (original Greek partner), Aquatera (leading environmental consultancy), WavEC (original Portuguese partner), La Tene Maps (original Irish partner) and the European Ocean Energy Association (new Belgium partner). The project outcomes are a needs analysis, a competency mapping tool, and innovative face-to-face training tools/modules designed to provide learners with the required competences. Less tangible outcomes include the diffusion of new knowledge related to new skills needs in the renewable technologies industry, with course delivery which also complies with new accreditation measures (EQF). Aqua-RET 2 supports the transfer of skills from industry sectors such as oil and gas to those newer green technologies in the marine renewable energy sector where a lack of skilled personnel has created a bottleneck.
