Measurements in the French-Belgian border area revealed high dioxin and PCB levels in the Menen area. On theother side of the border, in Bousbecque, the PCD deposits are also higher than the regional Nord-Pas de Calais average. These high levels point to the existence of active sources in the border area Menen-Wervik/Halluin-Bousbecque.In addition, in France increased concentrations of dioxin-like PCB’s were measured in dairy farms, making the produced milk unsuitable for consumption. In spite of repeated measurements on both sides of the border, the pollution sources could not be identified. Therefore, the Flemish and French partners decided to jointly conduct a study to identify the sources of the pollution.
