Adult Dyslexia

The project aims to develop new tools for detecting and meeting the needs of adults and young adults with dyslexia whose symptoms frequently go undetected. This goal will be achieved by developing a new screening instrument to identify adult dyslexics and by developing a motivational interview to counsel and advise identified adult dyslexics with regard to their VET opportunities. The project will draw on current best practice with adult dyslexia in Europe and the USA. The training needs of staff working with adult dyslexics will be analysed with respect to the project partners' educational and vocational systems in Iceland, Denmark, Scotland and Latvia. These countries will also provide the test sites for piloting the screening instrument and the motivational interview. Each project partner will be given a specific task to accomplish, from evaluation to dissemination, in the course of the project's development. The screening instrument will be designed to detect both primary and secondary symptoms of dyslexia. The follow-up motivational interview will be developed to offer appropriate counselling and referral advice to adult dyslexics about VET opportunities. Two manuals, in English, will be written to accompany the screening instrument and the motivational interview. In addition, multi-media educational software for counselling dyslexics about VET will be devised in the course of the project. The screening instrument, motivational interviews and accompanying manuals will be available, in English, via the project website. The website will also contain information on best practice in counselling dyslexics. Seminars/workshops will take place for staff working with dyslexics who wish to address their VET needs.
