The City of Reykjavík faces new challenges in its work immigrants and refugees. The number of immigrants and asylum seekers has grown steadily and now one in ten of the city’s inhabitants is of a nationality other than Icelandic and these numbers will increase. Therefor city officials have made it their ambition to build staff’s knowledge and skills in these matters. The department of welfare is not classified as an educational institution but does however have significant responsibilities in education both towards its almost 2700 members of staff and the users of welfare services. Iceland has little experience in multiculturalism and therefor it is important to learn from our neighbouring countries and find ways to ensure successful integration of individuals and families from abroad. The office of consultation here applies for a grant to travel with 20 staff members from diverse fields to go on an educational trip to Dortmund in Germany to visit CHANCENGLEICH in Europa, a NGO that specialises in the matters of immigrants and refugees. The have great experience in multiculturalism and work hands on with immigrants and various interest groups. The Icelandic participants will do a course organised by CHANCENGLEICH, visit other NGO’s and meet different interest groups. Special emphasis will be laid on learning about work with disabled or elderly immigrants and refugees. The participants will come from many different offices within the department of welfare. The reason behind that is to make sure the knowledge that they gather will trickle down all across the department. The project manager will be responsible for all practical arrangements such as logistics and communication with CHANCENGLEIGH. All 20 participants along with other staff will take a survey on their knowledge about immigrants and refugees. The project manager, along with HR department and office of quality and research will use their learnings from this trip to create new educational material that will be used to spread the knowledge across the department of welfare. At the end of the project the staff will take the survey again so that the success of the project can be evaluated. After the project ends a summary report will be presented for head office and the city’s welfare council.
