Active structures with smart materials: Modelling, control, numerical simulation and experimental validation (ASSM)
Start date: Sep 1, 2007, End date: Jul 31, 2008 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project is dedicated to the active control for suppression of vibrations of flexible smart structures in the industrially active field of new materials and adaptive systems. Active structures are equipped with sensors, actuators and computer-based cont rol. New materials are used in the design of controllers and sensors yielding smart systems. The investigations consist in developing recent models, control laws, strategies for design optimisation, virtual simulation, and realization in hardware devices. The modelling covers coupling effects, structural defects and interface dynamics. The active control is considered in terms of the new H8 robust control theory. Choice and positioning of sensors and actuators is considered. Respective software is developed. The most important stage of the project is the experimental hardware validation. The technological issues of this project are combining of the most recent developments in sensor and actuator technology, networks, and signal processing and computer techniques to design new active smart systems.Active structures belong to the highly multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary mechatronics. Attractive virtues of the proposal are the new methodology for modelling; the novel on-line realization software; the new robust control strategies. An excellence of the project is the new technological solution realized in industrial equipment. Benefits for the researcher are entering new industrial problems in active structures reaching their independent statement and solving. She is an experienced researcher in applied mathematics and control theory. The project supports completing her competences with engineering aspects. She will reach professional maturity and further career development. The project supports spreading of knowledge and creating synergies with education. Its aims lead to shortening the way from science to manufacture. It contributes involving an associate country in ERA and reinforces the role of women in research.
