Activating Teaching and Learning (CLIL) in the English classroom
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

In 2013 the Coenecoop College decided to become a bilingual school, Dutch - English. To obtain this goal it was necessary to select qualified teachers and offer them the opportunity to become qualified bilingual teachers. Therefore these teachers have to be trained in English and in CLIL skills. To raise their level of English to the required level, they follow an English course given by our TTO coach Mrs Hanna Simon-Duttenhofer on Thursday afternoons. To become experienced CLIL teachers, our bilingual teachers have to participate in a course in Cumbria in the UK., a course offered by Janet Streeter: " Activating Teaching & Learning in the English CLIL Classroom" and implement the obtained knowledge in their bilingual classes. There are 15 teachers involved in this project and our goal is that all bilingual teachers will achieve a Cambridge certificate for English on at least B1 level and become qualified CLIL teachers. Their experience as CLIL teachers will be frequently checked by our TTO coach and by bilingual colleagues. This should result in bilingual education at a level that meets the requirements of the European Platform and will be ascertained by them during a one-day accreditation visit. Furthermore, our bilingual teachers will be involved in exchanging CLIL skills with teachers in the regular stream in order to achieve a higher learner outcome in at least all language departments, but preferably in all departments. As a bilingual school we will participate in several bilingual activities organised by the European platform and exchange experience and knowledge with other bilingual schools in the Netherlands. Moreover, we seek to set up an exchange programme with a foreign school from the European Community. The purpose is internationalisation and the language of communication will be English. The ultimate goal is to offer our pupils the opportunity to become qualified bilingual pupils with knowledge of and experience in international projects which will enable them to participate in an international context.
