Action Learning for Children in Schools 2
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Apr 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

One out of five European children are either overweight or obese, less than 10% of them meet the WHO recommendations on physical activity, and children only spend 5% of their school-time in physical activities, the objective of ALCIS is to develop a higher understanding of the importance for schoolchildren to adopt healthy lifestyles and regular physical activity. Based on the pilot action of ALCIS 1 which proved to be very successful, the new ALCIS 2 provides schoolchildren +/- 12 years with a series of fun-based exercise classes combined with a 4-week education programme. It will take place in 10 EU countries, involving up to 180 community-based sport/fitness centres cooperating with their local schools. It is expected that there will be 12,000-14,000 children directly benefiting from the action which will start on the European Week of Sport focus day on education. It will be coordinated with the national contact points for the European Week of Sport together with specifically developed promotional materials, press coverage, and social media campaign. The educational material will be based on ALCIS 1 in 2 parts. The 1st is a personal diary for the schoolchildren that helps to them to make healthy choices in relation to nutrition, physical activity, stress management and overall well-being. The 2nd part is a teachers’ guide which has complete lesson plans. In ALCIS 1 the materials were rated good or very good and 96% of the teachers would use them again in following years. 80% of the children thought that their activity levels had increased as a result of ALCIS.A special feature of ALCIS 2 will be a pilot intervention with refugee children who are now living in Brussels, because physical activity is seen as an essential ingredient for healthy growth and development for all children, and that these good habits can be taken into adulthood. The project concludes with a guide on good practice that can be used by other grass roots sport organisations.
