ACCESS Improving accessibility of services of general interest – organisational innovations in rural mountain areas (ACCESS)
Start date: Aug 31, 2008, End date: Aug 30, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

The maintainance of a spatially and socially equal accessibility to services of general interest (SGI) is a core issue to the functionality of mountain areas. However, the ongoing territorial concentration of SGI leads to a vicious circle of further deterioration in the quality of provision which in turn causes a decreasing demand in the existing services. The withdrawal of SGI has many negative consequences for the affected regions of which a reduced functionality, competitiveness and a higher amount of motorised mobility are the most pertinent. The ACCESS project therefore aims at improving the accessibility to SGI in sparsely populated, mountain areas mainly by finding new forms of organisation of SGI, using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and fostering demand oriented, integrated mobility systems. To achieve these ambitious goals, ACCESS builds on a transnational approach and on participatory methodologies to assess the specific demands of stakeholders on different levels. Achievements: One of the main outputs in this period was the ACCESS regional conference in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany). Out of the 25 ACCESS pilot activities in the ACCESS test areas 22 started with the implementation. Some of them are already fully operational and opening events have been organised namely for the center of mobility in Carinthia, the videoservice desks in Franche Comté as well as nature park bus lines in Austria. In this reporting period not less than 13 media articles, 2 TV documentations and 1 radio report on ACCESS pilot activities have been published. Additionally 2 flyers/brochures describing services of the ACCESS pilot activities to a larger public have been generated and 1 public conference and one project steering committee meeting (PSC) have been organised.
