A Way towards Effective Vocational Training of Deaf/Hearing Impaired People

The project concerns professional development of staff in training Deaf/hearing impaired students. Many countries do not provide teacher education in the area of vocational training of Deaf/hard of hearing persons, whose education requires a special approach. Provision of quality education for Deaf people is key to successful involvement in the labour market. It is an issue of concern. Thus, cooperation of educational and business sector in the area of training is essential. The main idea of the project was the development of Recommendations on Vocational Training of Deaf/Hearing Impaired Persons (thereafter - Recommendations) through the collaboration and participation of trainers and entrepreneurs from 4 European countries (Ireland, Lithuania, Spain and UK) in the activities. The arranged Recommendations include the following chapters: 1) Communication with Deaf/hearing impaired students, 2) Equality within the programmes, 3) Assessment of students, 4) Delivery of the training content, 5) Progression to the labour market. During the first project year, partners worked on collection and arrangement of draft material for the Recommendations. During the second year, the draft Recommendations were finalized, tasks for piloting group of students were discussed, arranged and later piloted by students of Lithuanian and Irish partner institutions together with future teachers from partner institutions of Spain and UK. The arranged Recommendations were translated into Lithuanian and Spanish languages and printed as well as placed on websites of partner institutions and that of the project (http://www.a-way-towards-effective-vocational-training-of-deaf.eu/ ). Moreover, Final Conference was organized, during which representatives of national and regional deaf organizations, teachers and deaf students of hosting school participated together with the project partners, challenges and results of the project were presented and other topics concerning the deaf were discussed.
