Start date: Sep 30, 2009, End date: Sep 29, 2010 PROJECT  FINISHED

Both of the areas of the Slovak Karst National Park and the Aggtelek national park suffer from high rate of unemployment (more than 20%). The existence of the national parks prevent from building heavy industry. The are is suitable for rural tourism. The tourism offer is rich, offer a number of show caves listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List. There are a number of touring routes like The Gothic Route or the Rout of the Iron. The area is rich on historical buildings. We can find chateaus and castles and a plenty of manor houses. The solution for the high unemployment rate is sustainable small scale tourism development supporting BandB accommodation and small pensions. Currently the offer of accommodation facilities is higher than the demand. There is a need to raise the number of tourists. Till town Rožňava and the Directorate of the National Park Aggtelek had a little common action. They were able only publish some common information brochures. There is a need to elaborate a common marketing strategy. The project contains common marketing activities which will lead to higher number of visitors. Target is 10% in 3 years. We will attract tourists from the V4 countries and also from Western Europe. In long term the presence of tourists will lead to establishment of more tourism SMES which will help to combat with the high unemployment rate. Achievements: The areas of the Slovak Karst National Park and the Aggtelek national park suffer from a high rate of unemployment because the existence of the national parks blocks the building of heavy industry. However, the area is suitable for rural tourism because a number of tourist sites are available in the region. The aim of the project was to develop common marketing activities and common information panels and signposts which could attract a high number of visitors into the region. With the cooperation of the Directorate of the Aggtelek National Park and the Municipality of Rožňava, a common Marketing Plan was elaborated to better promote the area. As a result of the project, several workshops and tourism fairs were organised in order to share knowledge between stakeholders, and a bilingual promotion material was created.
