A new sound for the EU
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our pupils are growing up in a fast, developing and dynamic world that at times can allow the heritage of arts and culture, such as music to be easily misplaced in our education system. This project aims to bring music to the fore front of our curriculum by offering a different approach to lessons allowing them to be more interesting and stimulating for the pupils. This project will be fully inclusive by integrating all pupils regardless of ability, age or special need. The objectives of this exciting opportunity are learning the language of sound, learning their musical heritage and sharing it with partners and celebrating the place of musical education in the partners’ curriculum. The pupils will explore nature’s sounds, examine music of differing periods and be motivated to create their own music. “A New Sound for the EU” is an interdisciplinary project using music to share traditions, not in a stereotypical way, but rather to celebrate the unique identity of the six partner countries involved: Croatia,England,France,Malta,Sweden and Turkey. The exchanges that are already occurring between partners is the key point to a successful partnership. We have no doubt that the experienced partners will help the new partners get the most from a multilateral project. Each partner will be responsible for sharing the project beyond their school to the wider public whether it be through local media or the web site. The pupils will take part in a range of activities with the first having the pupils learn about the partner schools involved in the project. Presentations and posters will be shared with each other. The pupils will become involved in musical aspects such as sharing traditional Christmas songs, exploring instruments and sounds, making instruments, researching periods of music and composers, perform dances and learn lyrics of modern songs to be performed during the final show. The pupils will be taught about the importance of legally downloading material from the internet. Video conferencing will play a large part in sharing and practising the material for the final show. This project will have a number of results that include but not limited to newspaper articles, videos of the Christmas songs and folk dances, mini instruments made from simple materials, sound and memory games, time lines, performances of music, power point presentations of composers, cds of music and a final show based on all the pieces of music shared during the project! “A New Sound for the EU” will impact upon musical skills allowing the pupils to gain a better knowledge of types of music, instruments and the ability to read sheet music. It will improve cross disciplinary skills by expanding their knowledge of geography, developing concentration skills and increasing their vocabulary skills. Lastly it will have an impact on participating schools through the establishment of a strong and long lasting partnership with the European schools. Overall this project will help pupils develop into a well rounded young EU citizen by improving their skills of team building, solving problems and most importantly celebrating similarities and accepting differences.
