A European Module on Undergraduate Teaching in Occupational Medicine

The proposed project is based on the need for improvement and harmonization of the training in occupational health issues for undergraduate students. Occupation has a large impact on health in Europe. In order to prevent and recognize occupational diseases, all health professionals should know about the potentially causal relationship between work and health. Until now, different aspects complicate the quality and quantity of teaching occupational medicine at undergraduate level : time constraints, growing number of students and low profile of the discipline. The project will develop a new study module to extend awareness of health and work issues to medical students and students in health sciences. The following products will be envisaged : a questionnaire survey on the nature and extent of undergraduate occupational medicine teaching, a needs-analysis, the selection of core competencies in order to develop clear learning objectives, technologies and teaching formats that are most effective for facilitating learning and stimulating students' interest, methods of assessment and a quality assurance report for the monitoring of the process and the outcomes.The developed module will be part of the core medical curriculum offered by all participating universities and will be available for use by any educational organisation. As an output, there will be an online module with written materials, case studies, power point presentations, Most of the developed materials will be available in English and in the partners' languages to maximize accessibility. Through the module, health professionals will be better prepared to define and manage the major occupational health problems and give advise on fitness for work which in the end will contribute to a healthier European population and workforce.
